DXF belongs to the CAD formats family
Raster vs vector graphic images
The difference between DXF and DWG
DXF (Drawing Interchange Format or Drawing Exchange Format) is an open-source CAD (Computer-Aided Design) data file format developed by Autodesk . DXF is a vector format and common in industries such as manufacturing, architecture, graphic design, game making, and any company that needs to manage electronic documents with an excellent resolution no matter the size of the file.
CAD files may contain 2D or 3D designs. 2D CAD files are often referred to as drawings, while 3D files are often called models, parts, or assemblies. The most popular CAD formats are .DWG, .DXF, .DGN and .STL.
Raster graphics images (or bitmaps) are made of pixels ordered in arrays or matrices. A pixel (PIcture ELement) is the smallest controllable unit of a picture. Each pixel has its coordinates and color, like small pieces of colored glass in a mosaic.
Vector graphics do not store image information as pixels. Instead, they contain mathematical expressions to generate and represent all details of an image. This approach has two main advantages: the image quality remains highest regardless of zooming actions, and the file size is about the same no matter the resolution of the image.
The same company, Autodesk, developed DXF and DWG. DXF is open-source, on the contrary to DWG (DraWinG), which is the native and proprietary file format for AutoCAD. Like DXF, DWG stores 2D and 3D designs and metadata. On the contrary to DXF which uses plain text, DWG is a binary format. Therefore, a DWG file will be lighter than a DXF file with the same content.
DXF or DWG ? You should choose DWG if the document can be accessed via AutoCAD or a program that is capable of handling DWG files. Consider DXF when sharing documents between different CAD or vector-based applications.
